Constantinople was earlier known as Byzantium. Constantine renamed it after himself, now known as Constantinople. It had walls that protected the western side of the city, from enemies. There was a moat that ran along the lands walls. If enemies managed to cross the moat, they came to the land walls of Constantinople. Often, enemies could pass the first wall, but not the second.
